Octoechos (liturgy)

Octoechos (liturgy)

A liturgical book called an Octoechos containing sets of hymns for each of eight echoi (tones or modes) exists for many rites of Eastern Christianity. These are somewhat analogous the tonaries of the Western Church but differ by being organized as temporal cycles and, generally, being significantly longer as well as containing only text and never musical notation.
