History

Prior to the 19th century, the whole land around Nungambakkam was covered by extensive farmland. In 1798, there was a dirt track leading from Munro Bridge to the then village of Nungambakkam. Sometime before 1816, this dirt tract was expanded and improved to form the Nungambakkam High Road.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is a history in all men’s lives,
Figuring the natures of the times deceased,
The which observed, a man may prophesy,
With a near aim, of the main chance of things
As yet not come to life.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

The history of literature—take the net result of Tiraboshi, Warton, or Schlegel,—is a sum of a very few ideas, and of very few original tales,—all the rest being variation of these.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.
    William James (1842–1910)
