- Died: U.S. Senator Cushman K. Davis (R-Minnesota), in St. Paul. As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Cushman championed American acquisition of overseas territories in Hawaii, Cuba and the Philippines. He liked to say that "I stand in the vestibule of the 20th century", but died 34 days before the end of the 19th Century. He had injured his right foot in September while campaigning for President McKinley's re-election, reportedly from "blood poisioning caused by the dye of a black silk stocking which entered his system through a slight abrasion". His last words, reportedly, were "Oh, that I might live five years more for my country's sake!"
