Norwood Junction Railway Station - Marshalling Yard

Marshalling Yard

The LB&SCR constructed a large marshalling yard to the south of the station during the 1870s, extended in the early 1880s. At their height the yards on both sides of the line each had over 30 sidings. Because of the narrow nature of the site these were laid in clusters of six to eight, one beyond another, with the lead-in to each forming an individual headshunt. With dwindling freight traffic the marshalling yard fell into disuse by the 1980s and the tracks were relaid to accommodate an enlarged Selhurst Depot.

Famous quotes containing the word yard:

Look, we’re all the same; a man is a fourteen-room house—in the bedroom he’s asleep with his intelligent wife, in the living-room he’s rolling around with some bareass girl, in the library he’s paying his taxes, in the yard he’s raising tomatoes, and in the cellar he’s making a bomb to blow it all up.
    Arthur Miller (b. 1915)
