Northern General Hospital - The Hospital Today

The Hospital Today

Currently, the hospital consists of six wings. Many of the older wings are named after famous families and individuals from Sheffield, particularly in the steel industry. These are:

  • Huntsman Building - named for Benjamin Huntsman, mostly orthopaedics, but also contains the A&E, X-Ray departments, the theatres, one of four Outpatients' departments, a large dining room and the site's main Medical Records department.
  • Firth Wing - named for Mark Firth and containing CCU, Vascular surgery and other surgical wards.
  • Chesterman Wing, the regional cardiology centre
  • Vickers Corridor - named for Edward Vickers, primarily Renal and endocrine disease but has the SAC (surgical assessment centre) ward as well as containing departments of Sheffield Medical School and the Sheffield Kidney Institute
  • Sorby Wing - named for Henry Clifton Sorby, and containing the renal outpatients unit.
  • Osborn Building - named for Sir Samuel Osborn Steelmaker, the spinal unit
  • Brearley Wing - named for Harry Brearley, and containing the respiratory and rehabilitation wards and a dining area
  • Bev Stokes Day-surgery unit
  • Critical care department - this contains ICU (intensive care unit), HDU (high dependency unit) and POSU (post operative surgical unit)
  • Hadfield Wing - named for Sir Robert Hadfield, this is the latest addition and houses many departments moving from soon-to-be emptied wings of the hospital, as well as a new neck of femur ward. This structure is 6-storeys tall and contains a full-height atrium, allowing natural light to enter the wards. As part of the redevelopment, the area around was landscaped.
  • A myriad of other buildings, including the Longley Centre for psychiatry, the Oakwood Young Peoples Centre, Rivermead Unit, Samuel Fox House and the Medical Education Centre (for undergraduate and postgraduate medical training), the Clock Tower, containing dining facilities, a gym, MacMillan Cancer Unit and five other outpatients' departments.

We go to great pains to alter life for the happiness of our descendants and our descendants will say as usual: things used to be so much better, life today is worse than it used to be.
