North West Hampshire (UK Parliament Constituency) - History

History

Former MP for Basingstoke David Mitchell was elected the first MP for this safe Tory seat on its creation for the 1983 general election. On his retirement in 1997 George Young won the seat and has held it since.

Young was previously MP for the West London constituency of Ealing Acton from 1974 to 1997, and was Transport Secretary in the Government of John Major from 1995 to 1997. He also ran for Speaker of the House in 2000 and 2009, being defeated on both occasions. Young was appointed Leader of the House of Commons in the coalition government following the 2010 general election, but returned to the back benches in prime minister David Cameron's cabinet reshuffle of 4 September 2012. He was however recalled as Chief Whip a few weeks later, in October.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Three million of such stones would be needed before the work was done. Three million stones of an average weight of 5,000 pounds, every stone cut precisely to fit into its destined place in the great pyramid. From the quarries they pulled the stones across the desert to the banks of the Nile. Never in the history of the world had so great a task been performed. Their faith gave them strength, and their joy gave them song.
    William Faulkner (1897–1962)

The history of a soldier’s wound beguiles the pain of it.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

Revolutions are the periods of history when individuals count most.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
