North Solomons

North Solomons can refer to three overlapping sets of Melanesian islands in the Western Pacific:

  • North Solomon Islands refers to the former colony of the German Solomon Islands, mostly in the present republic of the Solomon Islands
  • North Solomons Province, also known as Bougainville after its largest island, is now a province of Papua New Guinea
  • Republic of North Solomons in part of the above, which unilaterally declared its independence but was reabsorbed into Papua New Guinea

Famous quotes containing the word north:

The English were very backward to explore and settle the continent which they had stumbled upon. The French preceded them both in their attempts to colonize the continent of North America ... and in their first permanent settlement ... And the right of possession, naturally enough, was the one which England mainly respected and recognized in the case of Spain, of Portugal, and also of France, from the time of Henry VII.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
