North Furlong Lake is a glacial tarn in the Ruby Mountains, in Elko County in the northeastern part of the state of Nevada. It is located at the head of North Furlong Canyon at approximately 40°33.4′N 115°24.8′W / 40.5567°N 115.4133°W / 40.5567; -115.4133, and at an elevation of 9590 feet (2920 meters). It has an area of approximately 16 acres (6.5 hectares), and a depth of up to 20 feet (6 meters). This is a common camp for users of the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail, which passes nearby.
North Furlong Lake is the primary source of North Furlong Creek, which after exiting the mountains merges with other streams to form the South Fork of the Humboldt River.
Famous quotes containing the words north, furlong and/or lake:
“If I could put my hand on the north star, would it be as beautiful? The sea is lovely, but when we bathe in it the beauty forsakes all the near water. For the imagination and senses cannot be gratified at the same time.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The Young Mans Best Companion, The Farriers Sure Guide, The Veterinary Surgeon, Paradise Lost, The Pilgrims Progress, Robinson Crusoe, Ashs Dictionary, and Walkingames Arithmetic, constituted his library; and though a limited series, it was one from which he had acquired more sound information by diligent perusal than many a man of opportunities had done from a furlong of laden shelves.”
—Thomas Hardy (18401928)
“His education lay like a film of white oil on the black lake of his barbarian consciousness. For this reason, the things he said were hardly interesting at all. Only what he was.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
