Niscemi - World War II

World War II

During World War II, Niscemi was the location of Ponte Olivo Airfield, a military airfield used by the United States Twelfth Air Force during the Italian campaign. After the war the area was redeveloped and no evidence of the wartime airfield remains.

Today, there is a military radio station for naval communication. Its tallest antenna is a 252 meters tall guyed mast, situated at 37°7'32"N 14°26'11"E.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:

    To behold the day-break!
The little light fades the immense and diaphanous shadows,
The air tastes good to my palate.

Hefts of the moving world at innocent gambols silently rising,
    freshly exuding,
    Scooting obliquely high and low.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

Only the person who has experienced light and darkness, war and peace, rise and fall, only that person has truly experienced life.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)
