Nile Lechwe

The Nile lechwe, wasserbock or Mrs Gray's lechwe or waterbuck (Kobus megaceros) is a species of antelope in the genus Kobus in the family Bovidae. It was first described by Leopold Fitzinger in 1855. Nile lechwe stand 90–100 cm (35–39 in) at the shoulder and weigh from 70–80 kg (150–180 lb).

Nile lechwe is a herbivore, and thus feeds upon foliage, grasses, fruits and twigs. They are gregarious, and form large and loose herds. It is found in floodplains in Southern Sudan and far southwestern Ethiopia.

It is native to Ethiopia and Sudan. It is listed as endangered by the IUCN, and its population is gradually decreasing.

Famous quotes containing the word nile:

    Hard by the lilied Nile I saw
    A duskish river dragon stretched along.
    The brown habergeon of his limbs enamelled
    With sanguine alamandines and rainy pearl:
    And on his back there lay a young one sleeping,
    No bigger than a mouse;
