Solo Work and Side Projects
Fraiture's side project, Nickel Eye, enlists the help of South (a UK band introduced to him by a friend) as his backing band. Nickel Eye recorded some demos at South Studios in Hackney, London. With some guest appearances by Nick Zinner of the New York City-based band Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Regina Spektor, The Time of the Assassins was completed a few months later in New York. The album is musically inspired by some of Nikolai's favorite artists, such as Neil Young, Frank Black, Leonard Cohen, and The Kinks. The Time of the Assassins was released on January 27, 2009 on Rykodisc.
Nickel Eye’s first performance was on October 15, 2008 at London’s Borderline venue.
Nikolai performed with dream-pop duo Beach House during their appearance on Conan on December 20, 2010.
In 2008 Fraiture composed the music and starred in the movie "A Kind of Dream" with wife Illy Fraiture. The movie was a 30 minute black and white silent film written and directed by Danny Velez.
On Saturday, May 19, 2012 for the 37th Season Finale of Saturday Night Live Nikolai played bass alongside The Arcade Fire and guest/musical host Mick Jagger.

Famous quotes containing the words solo, work, side and/or projects:
“All mothers need instruction, nurturing, and an understanding mentor after the birth of a baby, but in this age of fast foods, fast tracks, and fast lanes, it doesnt always happen. While we live in a society that provides recognition for just about every life eventfrom baptisms to bar mitzvahs, from wedding vows to funeral ritesthe entry into parenting seems to be a solo flight, with nothing and no one to mark formally the new moms entry into motherhood.”
—Sally Placksin (20th century)
“The last thing one discovers in composing a work is what to put first.”
—Blaise Pascal (16231662)
“The only way to win is to fight on the side of your adversaries.”
—Francis Picabia (18781953)
“One of the things that is most striking about the young generation is that they never talk about their own futures, there are no futures for this generation, not any of them and so naturally they never think of them. It is very striking, they do not live in the present they just live, as well as they can, and they do not plan. It is extraordinary that whole populations have no projects for a future, none at all.”
—Gertrude Stein (18741946)
