Industries
The basic industries on which Neyveli thrives are the lignite mines (I, II, IA) and thermal power stations (I,II & I-Extn.). The largest 'open-cast' mines in India, with very large machinery, the lignite mines is an engineering marvel. Since, the entire township has been built for the purpose of employees of the corporation, the other sources of economic activity are the support services to the township. This includes contracts with the NLC, shops, private hospitals in the periphery, schools etc. There are also a lot of mining industries that have been developed in the last two decades. A fertilizer, B&C plant that was owned by Neyveli Lignite Corporation was closed few years back.
