Newcastle Flyer - The 38 Class Hauled Trains

The 38 Class Hauled Trains

In January 1943 the first 38 class locomotive entered service. Although 3801 first worked a Newcastle Flyer service in February 1943, it would be May 1944 before they were regularly introduced and even then continued to share the duties with 36 class locomotives for another three years. From July 1945 a third daily service was introduced with all services now operating as the Newcastle Express. From November 1947 all services were operated by 38 class locomotives with a fastest journey time of 2 hours 18 minutes.

In April 1948 air-conditioned HUB set rolling stock was introduced to the service replacing N type steel carriages. The Newcastle Flyer was the last express train in Australia to be worked by steam locomotives. This came to an end on 29 December 1970 when 3820 hauled the final steam powered service.

Famous quotes containing the words class, hauled and/or trains:

    There is only one class in the community that thinks more about money than the rich, and that is the poor. The poor can think of nothing else.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

    Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,
    Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;

    Bravest of all in Frederick town,
    She took up the flag the men hauled down;
    John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892)

    The complaint ... about modern steel furniture, modern glass houses, modern red bars and modern streamlined trains and cars is that all these objets modernes, while adequate and amusing in themselves, tend to make the people who use them look dated. It is an honest criticism. The human race has done nothing much about changing its own appearance to conform to the form and texture of its appurtenances.
