Clubs and Teams

Newbury Park High School has 44 academic teams and clubs. The Interact Club, a social service club sponsored by Rotary International, is the largest club on campus with over one hundred members (www.nphsinteract.org). The Fencing Club is one of the longest surviving clubs on campus with over 20 sustained members. Hosted by Mr. Flaherty, they hold fencing bouts in the school cafeteria after school on Wednesdays. In addition, NPHS is home to seven competitive academic teams including: Academic Decathlon, Academic Competitions, Model United Nations, Future Business Leaders of America, Junior State of America, Mock Trial, and Speech and Debate. Speech and Debate and Mock Trial are known for routinely winning competitions at both state and regional levels. Future Business Leaders of America, although relatively recent, has already placed many members in sectional, state and national competition. In 2009, the Mock Trial team placed first in Ventura County, and seventh in the State of California. In 2010, the team took second place in Ventura County, despite a second victory over former county champion La Reina High School, and a perfect win/loss record. In its four year history, the Academic Competitions Club has also had perennial success including three first place awards and one second place award at the Geo Bowl and top finishes at the WorldQuest competitions. Recently, the Club sent a team to compete in the County Quiz Bowl. The team had a perfect winning streak, and claimed first place. The Model United Nations Club has attended several regional simulations, where it has won many awards for outstanding presentation and research. Other clubs include the Key Club, Natural and Organic Foods Club, Art Club, Multicultural Club, Red Cross Club, American Cancer Society Club, Animal Welfare Club, FHA-HERO, Invisible Children, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Club, White Rice Club, Philosophical Debate Club, Pay It Forward Club, Drama Club, Equestrian Club, Robotics Club, Hogwarts Club, Indian Club, Surf Club, etc. Academic recognition clubs include both the National Honors Society and the California Scholarship Federation.

Famous quotes containing the words clubs and, clubs and/or teams:

I had the idea that there were two worlds. There was a real world as I called it, a world of wars and boxing clubs and children’s homes on back streets, and this real world was a world where orphans burned orphans.... I liked the other world in which almost everyone lived. The imaginary world.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)

Neighboring farmers and visitors at White Sulphur drove out occasionally to watch ‘those funny Scotchmen’ with amused superiority; when one member imported clubs from Scotland, they were held for three weeks by customs officials who could not believe that any game could be played with ‘such elongated blackjacks or implements of murder.’
—For the State of West Virginia, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

A sturdy lad from New Hampshire or Vermont who in turn tries all the professions, who teams it, farms it, peddles, keeps a school, preaches, edits a newspaper, goes to Congress, buys a township, and so forth, in successive years, and always like a cat falls on his feet, is worth a hundred of these city dolls. He walks abreast with his days and feels no shame in not “studying a profession,” for he does not postpone his life, but lives already.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
