New Zealand National Rugby Sevens Tournament - History

History

The New Zealand National Rugby Sevens Tournament was first held in 1975 in Auckland, where Marlborough were the very first champions. Since then the tournament has been held every year (except 1987, 1988, and 2003) and held at various venues. The tournament has been held in Queenstown since 2004, before this Palmerston North hosted the event.

2009 is the first tournament where the entire event has been screened live by Sky TV.

The event also serves as an opportunity for players to be selected for the New Zealand Sevens side, as the squad is selected shortly after the event.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)

The whole history of civilisation is strewn with creeds and institutions which were invaluable at first, and deadly afterwards.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

The greatest honor history can bestow is that of peacemaker.
    Richard M. Nixon (1913–1995)
