New York Community Trust

The New York Community Trust was founded in 1924 to distribute the income from charitable funds established by will to improve the quality of life in New York City. It also offers services to living donors. It is one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the United States, and pioneered donor advised funds in 1931. In 2011, it made grants totaling $137 million from assets of $1.9 billion in more than 2,000 charitable funds.

The Trust works with donors who are planning a deferred gift, writing a will, or giving today. Donors may set up four different types of funds at The Trust: Field-of-Interest, Unrestricted, Donor-Advised, or Designated. The current programs areas for their competitive grants program (those not recommended by donor-advisors) are:

Children, Youth & Families

Community Development and the Environment

Education, Arts, & the Humanities;

Health and People with Special Needs

Famous quotes containing the words york, community and/or trust:

    New York is something awful, something monstrous. I like to walk the streets, lost, but I recognize that New York is the world’s greatest lie. New York is Senegal with machines.
    Federico García Lorca (1898–1936)

    The community which has neither poverty nor riches will always have the noblest principles.
    Plato (c. 427–347 B.C.)

    We need not fear excessive influence. A more generous trust is permitted. Serve the great. Stick at no humiliation. Grudge no office thou canst render. Be the limb of their body, the breath of their mouth. Compromise thy egotism.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
