New Albany High School Theatre Arts Department

Under the guidance of Theatre Arts Director, Gina Theresa Cisto - NAHS Theatre Arts Department is a bustling and well-rounded Dramatic Arts program. Classroom instruction explores a myriad of topics including theatre history, script analysis, makeup application, costume design, set building and lighting design - to name only a few. Simultaneously, NAHS TAD students fully explore the Actor’s process while working in our Actor’s Studio – a classroom/black box theatre with stage lighting and a practice stage. In addition to the rigorous aspects of our academic and acting curricula, our mission also includes garnering community wide interest to the NAHS Theatre Arts program while sharing a wealth of camaraderie, collaboration and amusement for every one involved. From actors, to builders to stage runners, NAHS Theatre Arts Department seeks to provide all who participate in our program a full comprehensive theatre experience. David Longest retired in 2012. His legacy is vast, including having students participate in the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. They were among some of the first high schools to perform "Beauty and the Beast" in 2005, and "High School Musical" in 2006-2007.The department was also featured in an article in The New York Times for their performance of "Into the Woods" in 2005.

I’ve always got such high expectations for myself. I’m aware of them, but I can’t relax them.
    Mary Decker Slaney (b. 1958)

... the school should be an appendage of the family state, and modeled on its primary principle, which is, to train the ignorant and weak by self-sacrificing labor and love; and to bestow the most on the weakest, the most undeveloped, and the most sinful.
    Catherine E. Beecher (1800–1878)

Art is for [the Irish] inseparable from artifice: of that, the theatre is the home. Possibly, it was England made me a novelist.
    Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973)

I won’t undertake war until I have tried all the arts and means of peace.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)

“Which is more important to you, your field or your children?” the department head asked. She replied, “That’s like asking me if I could walk better if you amputated my right leg or my left leg.”
—Anonymous Parent. As quoted in Women and the Work Family Dilemma, by Deborah J. Swiss and Judith P. Walker, ch. 2 (1993)
