Early Life
Hamilton was born in Fleur-de-Lis, a Monmouthshire pit village near Blackwood, Caerphilly. His father was a chief engineer for the National Coal Board. His grandfathers were coal miners. Hamilton grew up in Ammanford in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. At the age of 15, in 1964, he joined the Conservative party.
