Neebish Island - Pine River Camp

Pine River Camp

Just across from Barbeau, Clifford Borbas opened a "canoe camp" on Neebish Island. The rustic camp was physically little more than a collection of crude cabins. The dining hall was a pavilion with log poles and a dirt floor next to a camp fire where the meals were provided. However for the better part of 30 years children came from all over the United States to engage in a unique camping experience. Pine River Camp closed in 1993.

Famous quotes containing the words pine, river and/or camp:

For a hundred and fifty years, in the pasture of dead horses,
roots of pine trees pushed through the pale curves of your ribs,
yellow blossoms flourished above you in autumn, and in winter
frost heaved your bones in the ground—old toilers, soil makers:
O Roger, Mackerel, Riley, Ned, Nellie, Chester, Lady Ghost.
    Donald Hall (b. 1928)

Cole Thornton: Just a minute, son.
Mississippi: I am not your son. My name is Alan Bourdillon Traherne.
    Cole: Lord almighty.
Mississippi: Yeah, well, that’s why most people call me Mississippi. I was born on the river in a flatboat.
    Leigh Brackett (1915–1978)

Among the interesting thing in camp are the boys. You recollect the boy in Captain McIlrath’s company; we have another like unto him in Captain Woodward’s. He ran away from Norwalk to Camp Dennison; went into the Fifth, then into the Guthries, and as we passed their camp, he was pleased with us, and now is “a boy of the Twenty-third.” He drills, plays officer, soldier, or errand boy, and is a curiosity in camp.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
