National Statistics Office (Philippines)

The National Statistics Office (NSO; Filipino: Pambansang Tanggapan ng Estadistika) is the Philippine government's major statistical agency responsible in collecting, compiling, classifying, producing, publishing, and disseminating general-purpose statistics as provided for in Commonwealth Act No. 591.

The NSO has also the responsibility of carrying out and administering the provision of the Civil Registry Law as provided for in Act No. 3753 dated February 1931.

The organization assumed its responsibilities when Commonwealth Act (C.A.) No. 591 was approved on August 19, 1940. It was then known as the Bureau of the Census and Statistics (BCS). It became the National Census and Statistics Office (NCSO) in 1974 until was renamed to be the National Statistics Office in 1987.

Famous quotes containing the words national, statistics and/or office:

    National isolation breeds national neurosis.
    Hubert H. Humphrey (1911–1978)

O for a man who is a man, and, as my neighbor says, has a bone in his back which you cannot pass your hand through! Our statistics are at fault: the population has been returned too large. How many men are there to a square thousand miles in this country? Hardly one.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Woman was originally the inventor, the manufacturer, the provider. She has allowed one office after another gradually to slip from her hand, until she retains, with loose grasp, only the so-called housekeeping.... Having thus given up one by one the occupations which required knowledge of materials and processes, and skill in using them ... she rightly feels that what’s left is mere deadening drudgery.
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)
