National Lottery (United Kingdom) - Percentage Return

Percentage Return

The National Lottery is a jackpot system with the majority of winnings going to those few players who pick all six numbers. For long term players, or those buying many tickets the average percentage return will equal the share of the ticket sales devoted to prize funds, about 45%. For evey £1 spent, they may expect to get £0.45 back. However, the spread of returns will be very wide and influenced by several factors that change week-by-week (e.g. the number of tickets sold, 'the distinct-ness' of the winning numbers) and ultimately, if you don't win big, you won't get a return on your investment. An empirical assessment using 10,000 random sets of numbers each week for 3 years found that, had the tickets been bought, the rate of return would have been less than 30%.

Famous quotes containing the words percentage and/or return:

Actually, if my business was legitimate, I would deduct a substantial percentage for depreciation of my body.
Contemplative and bookish men must of necessitie be more quarrelsome than others, because they contend not about matter of fact, nor can determine their controversies by any certain witnesses, nor judges. But as long as they goe towards peace, that is Truth, it is no matter which way.
    John Donne (c. 1572–1631)

Compassion is frequently a sense of our own misfortunes, in those of other men; it is an ingenious foresight of the disasters that may fall upon us hereafter. We relieve others, that they may return the like when our occasions call for it; and the good offices we do them are, in strict speaking, so many kindnesses done to ourselves beforehand.
François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)
