National Liberation Council
The National Liberation Council (NLC) was the name of the Ghanaian government after the elected government of the Convention Peoples' Party led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown on February 24, 1966. This government was in place till they handed over to a democratically elected government on October 1, 1969.
This was the first coup in Ghana and it was a bloody one. The CIA appears to have had at least a year's notice of the coup d'état. Some sources believe that they may even have helped in some way. The was very heavy fighting and some loss of life as well. The NLC immediately banned all political parties and suspended the constitution. They eventually handed over power to the Progress Party led by Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia.

Famous quotes containing the words national, liberation and/or council:
“Our national experience in Americanizing millions of Europeans whose chief wish was to become Americans has been a heady wine which has made us believe, as perhaps no nation before us has ever believed, that, given the slimmest chance, all peoples will pattern themselves upon our model.”

“Womens Liberation is just a lot of foolishness. Its the men who are discriminated against. They cant bear children. And no ones likely to do anything about that.”
—Golda Meir (18981978)
“Daughter to that good Earl, once President
Of Englands Council and her Treasury,
Who lived in both, unstaind with gold or fee,
And left them both, more in himself content.
Till the sad breaking of that Parliament
Broke him, as that dishonest victory
At Chaeronea, fatal to liberty,
Killd with report that old man eloquent;”
—John Milton (16081674)
