Future
The National League System is expected to continue to operate in a broadly similar manner to how it does currently with the only public plans being the intent to reduce the number of Step 5 leagues to twelve. The 2006 abolition of the Isthmian League Division Two had this in mind and, in 2006, it asked the Essex Senior League and the Kent League to consider merging (at that time the only two remaining regions with one level rather than two at this level). However, no merger occurred and the Kent Invicta League has since been formed to leave Essex as the only place in the country where one league effectively straddles two levels of the NLS. In 2012, the FA is holding meetings with clubs to consult them on the future restructuring. The FA hopes to reduce the number of Step 5 leagues to twelve by the 2013–14 season, with the number of clubs in each league being gradually reduced to 22 through adjustments to the number of relegation places.
A further possible future change is the increase of the NLS's remit to an eighth step.
