On its opening weekend, Animal House grossed $276,538, in 12 theaters. The film grossed over $1,000,000 per week, becoming the second most popular 1978 US film, trailing only Grease. It made $120.1 million in North America and went on to have a domestic lifetime gross of $141.6 million.
