The National Heritage Foundation (NHF) was formed by Dr. J.T. "Dock" Houk in 1994. It became one of the largest donor-advised funds in the country.
On August 16, 2006, in response to the Pension Protection Act of 2006, NHF changed the way they made grants from their umbrella projects to charitable programs. NHF informed all its projects that only 26 U.S.C. ยง 501(c)(3) organizations would be able to continue to receive grants from NHF.
In January 2009, the NHF filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while appealing a lost lawsuit. During this bankruptcy process, donor advised foundations were not able to disburse funds to other non-profits.
In late 2009, NHF emerged from bankruptcy and has fulfilled its reorganization plan.
On November 21, 2011 NHF's tax exempt status was voluntarily revoked.

Famous quotes containing the word events:
“One cannot be a good historian of the outward, visible world without giving some thought to the hidden, private life of ordinary people; and on the other hand one cannot be a good historian of this inner life without taking into account outward events where these are relevant. They are two orders of fact which reflect each other, which are always linked and which sometimes provoke each other.”
—Victor Hugo (18021885)
“There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community. By carefully chronicling the current events of contemporary life, it shows us of what very little importance such events really are. By invariably discussing the unnecessary, it makes us understand what things are requisite for culture, and what are not.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“Reporters are not paid to operate in retrospect. Because when news begins to solidify into current events and finally harden into history, it is the stories we didnt write, the questions we didnt ask that prove far, far more damaging than the ones we did.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
