National Clarion Cycling Club - The National Clarion Cycling Club Today

The National Clarion Cycling Club Today

2013 update. Since 2007 the Clarion Cycling Club has seen a significant increase in its membership doubling in some 5 years tracking the popularity of cycling in the UK. Many new sections have started up from West Lothian, North Cheshire, Sheffield, Malmesbury, Yorkshire Coast, Saddleworth and with several others in their infancy. Today the Clarion stands less for political activism and more for inclusivity, openness and equality. Despite the Clarion changing with the times, it still stands true to one of its earlier mottos - 'fellowship is life'. A biannual award winning newsletter called 'Boots and Spurs' is published by the membership for the membership. The annual conference remains the mainstay of a social get together of like minded cyclists as well as the fulcrum of democracy within the Clarion.

In 2006 a splinter group called National Clarion Cycling Club 1895 North Lancs Union was formed but this is not affiliated to the National Clarion Cycling Club which was formed in 1894 and has continuous membership to this day (2013).

Famous quotes containing the words national, clarion, cycling, club and/or today:

...America has enjoyed the doubtful blessing of a single-track mind. We are able to accommodate, at a time, only one national hero; and we demand that that hero shall be uniform and invincible. As a literate people we are preoccupied, neither with the race nor the individual, but with the type. Yesterday, we romanticized the “tough guy;” today, we are romanticizing the underprivileged, tough or tender; tomorrow, we shall begin to romanticize the pure primitive.
    Ellen Glasgow (1873–1945)

Mr. Wiggam, I want you to change the policy of The Clarion. I want you to write a story I should have written myself long ago. I want you to tell the people of San Francisco that no city can exist without law and order. Write a story about that flag, write about what verifies and brings a promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. There are some people in this town who don’t seem to know that. Let The Clarion tell them.
    Ben Hecht (1893–1964)

From the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.
    Charles Darwin (1809–1882)

Please accept my resignation. I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member.
    Groucho Marx (1895–1977)

The greatest felony in the news business today is to be behind, or to miss a big story. So speed and quantity substitute for thoroughness and quality, for accuracy and context. The pressure to compete, the fear somebody else will make the splash first, creates a frenzied environment in which a blizzard of information is presented and serious questions may not be raised.
    Carl Bernstein (b. 1944)
