The Nakhichevan ASSR (Nakhichevan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic; Azerbaijani: Нахчыван Мухтар Совет Сосjалист Республикасы Naxçıvan Muxtar Sovet Sosyalist Respublikası; Armenian: Նախիշեվան ԱՍՍՀ) was an autonomous republic within the Azerbaijan SSR, itself a republic within the Soviet Union. It was formed on March 16, 1921 and became a part of the Azerbaijan SSR proper on February 9, 1924.
In the 1940s, when the Azerbaijani Latin alphabet was being replaced by Cyrillic, the flag (shown in the infobox) is presumed to have fallen out of use, being replaced by a Soviet flag defaced by Нахчыван МССР in gold and a dark blue bar along the fess.

Famous quotes containing the words autonomous, soviet, socialist and/or republic:
“The modern world needs people with a complex identity who are intellectually autonomous and prepared to cope with uncertainty; who are able to tolerate ambiguity and not be driven by fear into a rigid, single-solution approach to problems, who are rational, foresightful and who look for facts; who can draw inferences and can control their behavior in the light of foreseen consequences, who are altruistic and enjoy doing for others, and who understand social forces and trends.”
—Robert Havighurst (20th century)
“They were right. The Soviet régime is not the embodiment of evil as you think in the West. They have laws and I broke them. I hate tea and they love tea. Who is wrong?”
—Alexander Zinoviev (b. 1922)
“I nearly always find, when I ask a vegetarian if he is a socialist, or a socialist if he is a vegetarian, that the answer is in the affirmative.”
—Katharine Fullerton Gerould (18791944)
“Jean Jacques Rousseau ... is nothing but a fool in my eyes when he takes it upon himself to criticise society; he did not understand it, and approached it with the heart of an upstart flunkey.... For all his preaching a Republic and the overthrow of monarchical titles, the upstart is mad with joy if a Duke alters the course of his after-dinner stroll to accompany one of his friends.”
—Stendhal [Marie Henri Beyle] (17831842)
