According to the 2011 census Nagaon district has a population of 2,826,006, roughly equal to the nation of Jamaica or the US state of Kansas. This gives it a ranking of 135th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 711 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,840 /sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 22.09%. Nagaon has a sex ratio of 962 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 74%.

Muslims 1,180,267 (50.99%), Hindus 1,106,354(2001).Nagaon presents a fascinating and bewildering mix of cultures of Islam,Hinduism,Sikhism,Jainism, and Buddhism .Now(2011) Muslims constitute more than 60% of the total population. NAGAON city is considered to be the fifth largest city in Assam after Guwahati,Silchar,Dibrugarh and Jorhat with a population of 147,231(2011).
