However, according to the latest figures; solely the metropolitan area of the region's capital, Mwanza, is home to 2,000,000 people. This implies that the region's current population has increased greatly from the figures of the last census in 2002.

As of 2007, the region covered an area of 20,095 square kilometres (7,759 sq mi) of dry land; however parts of the region went to establish the Geita Region in 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words area and/or population:

The area [of toilet training] is one where a child really does possess the power to defy. Strong pressure leads to a powerful struggle. The issue then is not toilet training but who holds the reins—mother or child? And the child has most of the ammunition!
    Dorothy Corkville Briggs (20th century)

It was a time of madness, the sort of mad-hysteria that always presages war. There seems to be nothing left but war—when any population in any sort of a nation gets violently angry, civilization falls down and religion forsakes its hold on the consciences of human kind in such times of public madness.
    Rebecca Latimer Felton (1835–1930)
