Area & Population
Mwanza region (in the 2002 census) had a population of 2,942,148 in all its eight districts. However, according to the latest figures; solely the metropolitan area of the region's capital, Mwanza, is home to 2,000,000 people. This implies that the region's current population has increased greatly from the figures of the last census in 2002.
As of 2007, the region covered an area of 20,095 square kilometres (7,759 sq mi) of dry land; however parts of the region went to establish the Geita Region in 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words area and/or population:
“I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates.”
—T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
“This was the Eastham famous of late years for its camp- meetings, held in a grove near by, to which thousands flock from all parts of the Bay. We conjectured that the reason for the perhaps unusual, if not unhealthful development of the religious sentiment here, was the fact that a large portion of the population are women whose husbands and sons are either abroad on the sea, or else drowned, and there is nobody but they and the ministers left behind.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
