Muhammad Sayyid Tantawy

Muhammad Sayyid Tantawy (also referred to as Tantawi, Arabic: محمد سيد طنطاوي‎) (28 October 1928 – 10 March 2010) was an influential Islamic scholar in Egypt. From 1986 to 1996, he was the grand Mufti of Egypt. In 1996, president Hosni Mubarak appointed him as the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, a position he retained until his death in 2010.
