After 20 years of being in power, the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy and its candidate Rupiah Banda, lost power to defeating Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front who received 44% of the national vote, by a margin of about 8%.

On 25 May 2012, Mumba was elected President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) political party, at that time Zambia's largest opposition party and recently the governing party. He defeated rival Felix Mutati along with several other candidates.
