Places of Interest

Near Mountrath on the R445 towards Portlaoise is a shapeless old Wish Tree in the form of a Sycamore tree called St Fintan's Well. The original well was filled in, but the water re-appeared in the centre of the tree. Hundreds of Irish pennies have been beaten into the bark as good luck offerings, until they eventually killed the tree.

Famous quotes containing the words places of, places and/or interest:

Schools and schoolmasters, as we have them today, are not popular as places of education and teachers, but rather prisons and turnkeys in which children are kept to prevent them disturbing and chaperoning their parents.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

Words whispered on Earth are heard in Heaven like thunder; evil done in dark places the gods see like lightning.
    Chinese proverb.

Where there is no exaggeration there is no love, and where there is no love there is no understanding. It is only about things that do not interest one, that one can give a really unbiased opinion; and this is no doubt the reason why an unbiased opinion is always valueless.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
