Mount Vernon Middle School is a 3 year middle school in the Mount Vernon City School District. It is the only middle school in the district. The official mascot is a yellow jacket, (previously a lion but changed in 2008), and the official school colors are orange and black. The school received national attention with the firing of John Freshwater, an 8th grade science teacher accused of branding a student with a Christian cross and teaching creationism in the classroom.
