Moses Taylor - Descendants

Descendants

Several prominent wealthy families owe a substantial portion of their fortunes to an inheritance from Moses Taylor.

The Winthrop family descendants of John Winthrop inherited the wealth of Moses's daughter Katherine Wilson Taylor (1839–1925) who married Robert Winthrop (1833–1892). Katherine's daughter married Hamilton Fish Kean (1862–1941), ancestor of the political Kean family which includes the former governor of New Jersey.

The Pyne family of New York and New Jersey inherited the wealth of Moses's daughter Albertina Shelton Taylor (1833–1900) who married Percy Rivington Pyne (1820–1895). Percy's son was Moses Taylor Pyne, one of the great benefactors of Princeton University and powerful member of its Board of Trustees, who would use his inherited money to support the development of Princeton from a college into a university.

The Taylor family descendants of Moses's son Henry Augustus Coit Taylor were prominent New York and Newport socialites.

Famous quotes containing the word descendants:

Not only does democracy make every man forget his ancestors, but also clouds their view of their descendants and isolates them from their contemporaries. Each man is for ever thrown back on himself alone, and there is danger that he may be shut up in the solitude of his own heart.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

And what if my descendants lose the flower
Through natural declension of the soul,
Through too much business with the passing hour,
Through too much play, or marriage with a fool?
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live...
    Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 30:19.
