Montgomery Academy - History

History

The Montgomery Academy was founded in 1959. Its first classes were held in the former governor's mansion on South Perry Street. Initially, students were in "forms" (grades) 1 through 6. The first 1959-60 "6th Form" constituted the first graduating class in 1966.

It can be noted the Montgomery Academy began during a period in southern history marred by segregation. The school's official admissions policy specifically states applicants will not be discriminated against based on background.

The school is part of the National Association of Independent Schools and adheres to the association's strict academic standards.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or a woman.
    Willa Cather (1876–1947)

There are two great unknown forces to-day, electricity and woman, but men can reckon much better on electricity than they can on woman.
Josephine K. Henry, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 15, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

The history of any nation follows an undulatory course. In the trough of the wave we find more or less complete anarchy; but the crest is not more or less complete Utopia, but only, at best, a tolerably humane, partially free and fairly just society that invariably carries within itself the seeds of its own decadence.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
