Writing Credits
The songwriting credits are shared between Mark Knopfler and Sting. Sting was visiting Montserrat during the recording of the song, and was invited to add some background vocals. Sting has stated that his only compositional contribution was the "I want my MTV" line, which followed the melody from his song "Don't Stand So Close to Me". Sting was reportedly embarrassed when his publishing company insisted on a co-writing credit (and royalties).

Famous quotes containing the word writing:
“When, said Mr. Phillips, he communicated to a New Bedford audience, the other day, his purpose of writing his life, and telling his name, and the name of his master, and the place he ran from, the murmur ran round the room, and was anxiously whispered by the sons of the Pilgrims, He had better not! and it was echoed under the shadow of the Concord monument, He had better not!”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
