McConnell also serves as a speaker for the Leadership Institute in Arlington, Virginia, an organization that teaches conservative Americans how to influence public policy through activism and leadership, and is a lifelong member of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. In 1997, he founded the James Madison Center for Free Speech, a Washington, D.C.-based legal defense organization.
