Royal Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research (Norwegian: Kunnskapsdepartementet, lit. Ministry of Knowledge) is a Norwegian government ministry responsible for education, research and kindergartens. The ministry was established in 1814, and since October 18, 2007 led by Tora Aasland and Kristin Halvorsen (Socialist Left) in 2009. The department reports to the legislature (Stortinget). Traditionally this ministry was also responsible for church affairs, but this function was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs in 2002.
Famous quotes containing the words ministry, education and/or research:
“the eave-drops fall
Heard only in the trances of the blast,
Or if the secret ministry of frost
Shall hang them up in silent icicles,
Quietly shining to the quiet Moon.”
—Samuel Taylor Coleridge (17721834)
“Well encounter opposition, wont we, if we give women the same education that we give to men, Socrates says to Galucon. For then wed have to let women ... exercise in the company of men. And we know how ridiculous that would seem. ... Convention and habit are womens enemies here, and reason their ally.”
—Martha Nussbaum (b. 1947)
“To be sure, nothing is more important to the integrity of the universities ... than a rigorously enforced divorce from war- oriented research and all connected enterprises.”
—Hannah Arendt (19061975)
