The ministry was established in 1814, and since October 18, 2007 led by Tora Aasland and Kristin Halvorsen (Socialist Left) in 2009. The department reports to the legislature (Stortinget). Traditionally this ministry was also responsible for church affairs, but this function was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs in 2002.
