History of 3rd Congressional District

Prior to 1992 the 3rd congressional district largely consisted of Calhoun County the home of Battle Creek and Eaton County along with about half the area of Lansing, and Kalamazoo County, including the city of Kalamazoo, but not Portage and the adjacent south-ward township. Famous quotes containing the words history of, history and/or district:

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)

A man will not need to study history to find out what is best for his own culture.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
