In 1995, the MCHS Volleyball team won the Indiana state championship.

In 2009, the Michigan City High School Quiz Bowl team placed 13th at the state competition in Lafayette, IN, surpassing all regular-season opponents from the DAC, including state powerhouse Andrean High School.

In 2010, the MCHS bowling team won the Indiana state championship.

In March 2010, the MCHS Japanese department's Level 3 and 4 teams, won two state titles from the Japanese Olympiad of Indiana (JOI). This event, which tests students' knowledge of Japanese culture, history and society, was held at Valparaiso High School, attracted some 200 students from 15 high schools.

In 2010, the Michigan City High School Envirothon teams both advanced to the State competition. Envirothon is an academic competition that tests student's knowledge of soil, aquatics, forestry, and wildlife. It also includes an additional category every year, which was groundwater in 2010.

On February 19, 2011, at the Science Olympiad Regional Competition at Indiana University Northwest, the MCHS team won first place in an unprecedented fourteen gold medals (in the Astronomy, Chemistry Lab, Disease Detectives, Dynamic Planet, Fossils, Microbe Mission, Mouse Trap Vehicle, Ornithology, Protein Modelling, Remote Sensing, Game On, Come Fly With Me, and Robot Ramble categories), won 24 out of 26 medals in all, and swept the second-place team, rival Chesterton High School by 33 points. This marked the first time MCHS has ever progressed beyond the preliminary regional competition in all of its ten years of SO participation. This was in part to a restructuring of the team, which included three self-appointed and team-accepted team captains, who reorganized the team into smaller sub-teams, each with its own area of expertise, including the school's first-ever robotics team, who designed, built, and operated a remotely controlled robotic vehicle and played a big part in winning first place. In the State-level competition, the team placed eighteen out of 24 Indiana high schools that managed to make it to State.
