Merovingians in Pseudo-history and Popular Culture

The Merovingians are extensively featured in the book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, in which they are claimed to be descended from Jesus and survived their deposition in 751. The book was later revealed to be based on a hoax originating with Pierre Plantard in the mid-20th century.

The word "Merovingian" has been used as an adjective, at least five times in Swann's Way by Marcel Proust.

The second and third installments of The Matrix film series include a French character called "Merovingian".

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

O, popular applause! what heart of man
Is proof against thy sweet, seducing charms?
    William Cowper (1731–1800)

All our civilization had meant nothing. The same culture that had nurtured the kindly enlightened people among whom I had been brought up, carried around with it war. Why should I not have known this? I did know it, but I did not believe it. I believed it as we believe we are going to die. Something that is to happen in some remote time.
    Mary Heaton Vorse (1874–1966)
