Menelaus Supporting The Body of Patroclus - The Second Medici Group

The Second Medici Group

The second group of Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus (not illustrated) was a gift in 1570 from the Florentine Paolo Antonio Soderini of Rome. It was said to have been found at the Mausoleum of Augustus. Identified as Ajax, is stands in the Cortile del Ajaco of Palazzo Pitti.

Further fragments of other Roman copies of this group have appeared during the 20th century, but more severe modern criteria have prevented any of them from being restored as a completed figural group.

Famous quotes containing the words medici and/or group:

The said doctor can easily practise upon a page, and, if he does well, he can use his remedies on my son.
    —Catherine De’ Medici (1519–1589)

Belonging to a group can provide the child with a variety of resources that an individual friendship often cannot—a sense of collective participation, experience with organizational roles, and group support in the enterprise of growing up. Groups also pose for the child some of the most acute problems of social life—of inclusion and exclusion, conformity and independence.
