Melbourne International Film Festival - Competition

Competition

Whilst MIFF remains mostly a non-competitive festival, since 1962 it has staged a highly regarded short film competition. It also presents audience popularity awards for feature film and documentary.

The first award ever presented was for "Best Short Film", which was changed to the "Grand Prix for Best Short Film" in 1965. From 1985, the Grand Prix has been officially presented by the City of Melbourne.

Famous quotes containing the word competition:

Wearing overalls on weekdays, painting somebody else’s house to earn money? You’re working class. Wearing overalls at weekends, painting your own house to save money? You’re middle class.
Lawrence Sutton, British prizewinner in competition in Sunday Correspondent (London)

Every sect is a moral check on its neighbour. Competition is as wholesome in religion as in commerce.
    Walter Savage Landor (1775–1864)

Never before has a generation of parents faced such awesome competition with the mass media for their children’s attention. While parents tout the virtues of premarital virginity, drug-free living, nonviolent resolution of social conflict, or character over physical appearance, their values are daily challenged by television soaps, rock music lyrics, tabloid headlines, and movie scenes extolling the importance of physical appearance and conformity.
    Marianne E. Neifert (20th century)
