Meet The Feebles - Critical Reception

Critical Reception

When the film was released in New Zealand, reviews tended towards the negative. NZ Listener critic Chris Hegan argued that instead of a plot, the film featured "just one episode after another, while the jokes wear thinner and the gross excesses grow humdrum through repetition."

During a limited theatrical releasein North America in 2002, critic James Berardinelli touched on aspects of the film which likely helped it win fairly limited release in cinemas. "The stories of these ... characters are told in a disgustingly graphic, obscenely offbeat, and caustically funny manner. Meet the Feebles is for those with a strong stomach and a seriously warped sense of humor. The film is so off the beaten track that it makes Monty Python seem mainstream." Rachel Sanders called it alternatively repulsive and magnificent. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a Fresh rating of 75%, based on 20 reviews (as of November 2010).

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or reception:

I know that I will always be expected to have extra insight into black texts—especially texts by black women. A working-class Jewish woman from Brooklyn could become an expert on Shakespeare or Baudelaire, my students seemed to believe, if she mastered the language, the texts, and the critical literature. But they would not grant that a middle-class white man could ever be a trusted authority on Toni Morrison.
Claire Oberon Garcia, African American scholar and educator. Chronicle of Higher Education, p. B2 (July 27, 1994)

But in the reception of metaphysical formula, all depends, as regards their actual and ulterior result, on the pre-existent qualities of that soil of human nature into which they fall—the company they find already present there, on their admission into the house of thought.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)
