Daily Journal - Millville, NJ January 8, 2010: MAYS LANDING—A former professional soccer player has been sentenced to 5½ years in state prison for causing a fatal crash in Atlantic County.

Matthew Maher of Cape May must serve 85 percent of the term imposed Thursday before becoming eligible for parole.

He was granted time-served credits for 34 anti-drunken driving presentations he has made at schools and colleges since pleading guilty in October to aggravated manslaughter and drunken driving. Those presentations included events in October at Cumberland County College in Vineland that were sponsored by the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance.

In March 2009, Maher's sport utility vehicle crashed into the rear of a minivan on the Atlantic City Expressway, killing 55-year-old Hort Kap of Philadelphia.

Maher, 25, played in five games for the Philadelphia Kixx of the National Indoor Soccer League in the 2008-09 season.

Famous quotes containing the word personal:

No Vice or Wickedness, which People fall into from Indulgence to Desires which are natural to all, ought to place them below the Compassion of the virtuous Part of the World; which indeed often makes me a little apt to suspect the Sincerity of their Virtue, who are too warmly provoked at other Peoples personal Sins.
    Richard Steele (1672–1729)

We should stop looking to law to provide the final answer.... Law cannot save us from ourselves.... We have to go out and try to accomplish our goals and resolve disagreements by doing what we think is right. That energy and resourcefulness, not millions of legal cubicles, is what was great about America. Let judgment and personal conviction be important again.
Philip K. Howard, U.S. lawyer. The Death of Common Sense: How Law Is Suffocating America, pp. 186-87, Random House (1994)

It is very certain that each man carries in his eye the exact indication of his rank in the immense scale of men, and we are always learning to read it. A complete man should need no auxiliaries to his personal presence.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
