Mathieu Assou-Ekotto - Football Career

Football Career

Born in Sainte-Catherine-lès-Arras, Assou-Ekotto spent nine years with local RC Lens (youth level comprised), but appeared mainly for the reserves during his spell, only appearing in three Ligue 1 games with the club. Released in the 1998 summer, he moved to Belgium and joined R.E. Mouscron.

In the 2000 off-season, Assou-Ekotto returned to France and played for three teams in three 1/2 seasons, competing in the second, third and fourth divisions (in the latter two categories with Valenciennes FC). On 19 January 2004 he moved back to Belgium and its top level, signing with R.A.A. Louviéroise.

Assou-Ekotto contributed with 11 matches in the first half of the 2005–06 season to Standard Liége's runner-up position, before joining Willem II in the Netherlands in the following winter transfer window. In yet another January move, he signed for former team Mouscron – first joining on loan – going on to play with the Hainaut outfit until it folded in December 2009.

Famous quotes containing the words football and/or career:

You can’t be a Real Country unless you have A BEER and an airline—it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER.
    Frank Zappa (1940–1993)

It is a great many years since at the outset of my career I had to think seriously what life had to offer that was worth having. I came to the conclusion that the chief good for me was freedom to learn, think, and say what I pleased, when I pleased. I have acted on that conviction... and though strongly, and perhaps wisely, warned that I should probably come to grief, I am entirely satisfied with the results of the line of action I have adopted.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)
