Martingale (betting System) - Effect of Variance

Effect of Variance

Sometimes, by temporarily avoiding a losing streak, a bettor achieves a better result than the expected negative return. A straight string of losses is the only sequence of outcomes that results in a loss of money, so even when a player has lost the majority of his bets, he can still be ahead overall, since he always wins 1 unit when a bet wins, regardless of how many previous losses.

Famous quotes containing the words effect of, effect and/or variance:

Self-denial is not a virtue: it is only the effect of prudence on rascality.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

Living more lives than one, knowing people of all classes, all shades of opinion, monarchists, republicans, socialists, anarchists, has had a salutary effect on my mind. If every year of my life, every month of the year, I had lived with reformers and crusaders I should be, by this time, a fanatic. As it is I have had such varied things to do, I have had so many different contacts that I am not even very much of a crank.
    Rheta Childe Dorr (1866–1948)

There is an untroubled harmony in everything, a full consonance in nature; only in our illusory freedom do we feel at variance with it.
    Fyodor Tyutchev (1803–1873)
