Martingale (betting System) - Effect of Variance

Effect of Variance

Sometimes, by temporarily avoiding a losing streak, a bettor achieves a better result than the expected negative return. Famous quotes containing the words effect of, effect and/or variance:

Considered physiologically, everything ugly weakens and saddens man. It reminds him of decay, danger, impotence; it actually reduces his strength. The effect of ugliness can be measured with a dynamometer. Whenever anyone feels depressed, he senses the proximity of something “ugly.” His feeling of power, his will to power, his courage, his pride—they decline with ugliness, they rise with beauty.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

The effect of studying masterpieces is to make me admire and do otherwise.
    Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889)

There is an untroubled harmony in everything, a full consonance in nature; only in our illusory freedom do we feel at variance with it.
    Fyodor Tyutchev (1803–1873)
