Market Deeping - History

History

The town's market has been held since at least 1220.

On 15 September 1995 Anne, Princess Royal visited the Manor House on Church Street, as Patron of SENSE (for deafblind people).

The £10 million 4 miles (6.4 km) long A15 and A16 bypass opened in July 1998, which incorporates a 2.5 miles (4 km) stretch of single and dual-carriageway. The A16 has now moved to the former A1073 from Crowland to Spalding, and the bypass became the A1175 in October 2011.

In 2007, at the behest of Whitehall, South Kesteven District Council was obliged to provide sites for travellers within South Kesteven; 19 sites were proposed, of which 5 were in or near Market Deeping. A public gathering in opposition to the sites was held on 11 July in Market Deeping town centre outside the council chambers. On 27 July 2007, opposition was expressed at a public meeting of 2,000 residents chaired by the local MP, John Hayes, who expressed his opposition to sites within The Deepings. Proposed sites in South Kesteven apart from The Deepings were in Bourne, Grantham and Stamford.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

While the Republic has already acquired a history world-wide, America is still unsettled and unexplored. Like the English in New Holland, we live only on the shores of a continent even yet, and hardly know where the rivers come from which float our navy.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.
    —J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)

They are a sort of post-house,where the Fates
Change horses, making history change its tune,
Then spur away o’er empires and o’er states,
Leaving at last not much besides chronology,
    Excepting the post-obits of theology.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
