Fisher married Ingrid Geech Hunt in 1971 and fathered two children, Rhydian Fisher, and the actress India Fisher, as well as taking over the upbringing of Hunt's two children by her previous marriage, the musician Crispin Hunt and the actress Francesca Hunt. The couple divorced in 1999. He is self-effacing and has compared himself to looking like Humpty Dumpty. He has lived in the Stoke-on-Trent district of Hartshill since first running for Parliament.

Fisher refused the offer of a peerage ahead of the 2001 General Election.

Fisher's 2004 book Britain's Best Museums and Galleries listed what were, in his opinion, the 350 best museums in the country.

In October 2009, it was revealed that Fisher is paid £67,000 a year as an adviser to a museum in the Middle East. The Qatar Museums Authority paid Fisher this sum for three board meetings a year.It is unknown if he is still part of the Qatar Museums Authority's board of trustees, but the authority's website does not mention his name in the list of members.

"Tony Blair manages to give the impression that he doesn't like trade unions, local authorities or the Labour party - people have sensed this and they don't like it"

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

Healthy parenting is nothing if not a process of empowerment. As we help to raise our children’s self-esteem, we also increase their personal power. When we encourage them to be confident, self-reliant, self-directed, and responsible individuals, we are giving them power.
    Louise Hart (20th century)

The principal thing children are taught by hearing these lullabies is respect. They are taught to respect certain things in life and certain people. By giving respect, they hope to gain self-respect and through self-respect, they gain the respect of others. Self-respect is one of the qualities my people stress and try to nurture, and one of the controls an Indian has as he grows up. Once you lose your self-respect, you just go down.
    Henry Old Coyote (20th century)
