Marine Corps Air Station Miramar - Miramar National Cemetery

Miramar National Cemetery

On 30 January 2010 a new National Cemetery was dedicated at the northwest corner of MCAS Miramar. The cemetery is an extension of Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and when it is complete will be able to accommodate the remains of approximately 235,000 veterans and spouses. Before its opening, Fort Rosecrans had been closed to most casket burials in 1966, and casket burials of San Diego region veterans occurred at Riverside National Cemetery. The cemetery design takes into account environmental considerations, preserving habitat for endangered California gnatcatchers and fairy shrimp. The first interment occurred in November 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words national and/or cemetery:

Let us waive that agitated national topic, as to whether such multitudes of foreign poor should be landed on our American shores; let us waive it, with the one only thought, that if they can get here, they have God’s right to come.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

The cemetery isn’t really a place to make a statement.
Mary Elizabeth Baker, U.S. cemetery committee head. As quoted in Newsweek magazine, p. 15 (June 13, 1988)
